What is Enema?

An enema is a procedure used to stimulate stool evacuation most commonly in the case of constipation or before performing certain medical diagnostic procedures.  This one is a liquid treatment and is most commonly used to relieve congestion in the bowel movement. With this technique, water is pushed up into the colon via the rectum which in turn stimulates the urge to evacuate. Enemas are fairly easy to perform at home on your own with enema kits and enema products but one should get in touch with their physician before trying it on their own.

As stated above, the most common condition which asks for an enema administration is constipation. People who are experiencing three or lesser bowel movements in a week can be stated constipated. The main task of the colon is to absorb all the water and nutrients from the food and get rid of the remaining waste material. But over the years the colon walls turn encrusted with accumulated waste making it inefficient and sluggish leading to constipation.  Mild constipation is common to occur in people who do not consume enough fiber or enough fluids on a day-to-day basis. Proper diet and regular exercising is a great way to prevent constipation.

An enema administration is one of the most common ways used to clear the bowel movement. However, it is the last option which your physician may suggest to get rid of constipation. If you have made the necessary changes to your diet and exercise without getting any results, your doctor might recommend you a laxative. In certain cases, laxatives are given prior to performing an enema to ease out the evacuation.

In some cases, your doctor may perform an enema especially before performing an X-ray of the colon. This helps in getting a clear picture of the same. An enema is often prescribed before performing a colonoscopy. For those who are not constipated, regular enemas are a great way to detoxify the colon while keeping it healthy.
